In this film "White Like Me," they show how segregated it was back then which wasn't even too long ago from now. Many different examples of racism goes on throughout this film.
Adolf Argy was an African who was brutally beaten to death by police officers. In John Howard Griffins book "Black Like Me," he darkened his skin with dye, medicine, and uv rays so he looked like an African American and he was very noticeably treated differently by everyone he had encountered with. He did it to experience and see what it is like to be an African Americans in the pre Civil Rights south of the 1950s. He was harassed, followed, and threatened many times for the 3 months he was dark skinned.
When Obama was elected everyone thought that racial segregation would end but, no. Even with a black president, the median wealth of white families is 20 times greater than the median wealth of black families. 70% of students that are colored attend schools where the majority of the students are black/brown. It is at least two times harder to get employed if you are an African American than if you are white and white applicants with a criminal record are more likely to be called back to a job interview even if the African American has no criminal record. Even the life expectancy is around about a 3-5 year difference which is crazy. There were more black people in jail or on probation than their were blacks enslaved in the 1850s before the Civil War.
Many thing were portrayed and brought up in this film but most importantly it showed how racially segregated our country was and how we need to improve and overcome those challenges that are very difficult to do so. But, it also could be an illusion and we just talk about race too much and that's why we can't get over it.
